Meet Leroy, “one cool dog!”

I had the pleasure of meeting this handsome boy yesterday at the Stafford Creek Corrections Center (SCCC) in Aberdeen, Wash. His name is Leroy and along with his 15 other canine classmates, Leroy is a graduate from the Freedom Tails training program.  Freedom Tails is an amazing program that pairs shelter dogs with SCCC inmates for eight weeks of intensive training before the dogs are adopted out to families. It’s a win-win-win for all involved: the staff at SCCC, the inmates and of course, the dogs (more on that in the upcoming Holiday issue of CityDog Magazine).

In the meantime, the reason Leroy is featured in this post is because he is the only Freedom Tails dog still available for adoption (all of the others went home yesterday with their new families). Leroy is a terrific dog (I witnessed this first-hand). In addition to his basic commands, he and his trainer Miguel Gaitan showed off his newly-learned tricks like catching a treat in mid air from across the room! According to Miguel, “Leroy is one cool dog!” If you would like to learn more about Leroy, here is the link to his page on Petfinder.com.
