This past June, a high-profiled event on “Responsible Dog Ownership” was held in Guangzhou. Guangzhou is the third largest city in China and known for being the dog and cat-eating capital of the world. This program was organized by Animal Asia and Guangzhou Public Security Bureau and was the first such event held at a school, aimed specifically at children. Animal Asia provided four dogs from it’s Professor Paws program, a school-based dog education program designed to show that dogs are our friends and not food.
In 2011, Animal Asia’s Professor Paws dogs visited an astonishing 2,750 children and 23 different schools. The success of the Professor Paws program with youth has made Guangzhous PBS believe that many adults could benefit from the practical tips like how to approach a dog and how to responsibly care for them. Promoting responsible dog care has officials hoping that it will reduce conflict between dog-owners and non-dog owners, especially in Guangzhou where residents keeping dogs are increasing each year.
