Why is That Dog Wearing Yellow Ribbon?

You may have seen someone walking a dog with a yellow ribbon on its leash or collar. It’s not a celebration of sunny weather but, instead, part of the Yellow Dog Project, These dogs and owners are trying to tell you something.

The Yellow Dog Project is a global movement of owners of dogs that need space. These dogs are not necessarily aggressive, but are more often dogs who have issues with fear; are rescue dogs that have not had sufficient training to act predictably around strangers; are in training for work or service; or other reasons specific to the dog.

The Project seeks to educate people about appropriate ways to approach or make contact with a dog. It’s important to ask the owner if you can pet their dog first, whether or not a dog is a “yellow dog.” If an owner says that their dog is scared of people or doesn’t like to be petted then their wishes should be respected. A dog who cringes and moves away from you should never be followed so you can pet them.

This funny video drives the point home:

Do you have a fearful dog or dog that could benefit from the yellow ribbon for other reasons?
